The midwife wine

Humagne Blanc Les Pyramides

AOC Valais
It was probably because of its name that Humagne Blanc made it into the local midwives' maternity kits. Derived from the Latin humanum vinum, ‘wine healthy for humans’, new mothers were often served a glass of this fortifying wine thanks to its high calcium and iron content. However, it certainly also helped the odd nervous man who was condemned to inactivity.

Humagne Blanc is an excellent accompaniment to aperitifs, starters, cheese and dishes with freshwater fish, e.g. steamed pike on leek strips.

Wine history
chevron-down

Humagne blanc is one of the autochthonous Valais grape varieties, i.e. the grape variety originally comes from the Valais. Due to its high calcium and iron content, it enjoys a healthy reputation and quickly became a midwife's wine. They served it to strengthen both the new mother and the newborn child. Incidentally, the beauty and down-to-earth nature of Valaisan children is attributed to the mother's milk, which was improved by the wine.
