Tasting findings of the 2018 - 2022 vintages
2022
A very beautiful vintage with a shiny robe that is light yellow in colour with greenish reflections. The bouquet is full of exotic fruits such as lychees and grapefruit. The ageing in barriques gives it complexity with fine brioche notes. The attack is delicious and powerful, underpinned by a clear acidity with citrus fruits and sorrel. The wood notes are very present on the long finish, adding complexity and merging harmoniously after a few months of rest. A young and promising vintage to discover this summer.
2021
The colour is bright, crystal clear with yellow-green reflections. The distinctive and elegant nose reveals aromas of wisteria and citrus fruits. This is followed by a richer background of pineapple and mango, perfectly emphasised by the subtle notes of barrel ageing. The palate is fresh and taut with plenty of length and complexity. A salty and spicy note prolongs the enjoyment and characterises the greatness of this very fine vintage. We are currently enjoying this Ambassadeur with a lobster bisque.
2020
When tasting this wine, it is easy to recall the impressions of last year. This is a great wine with a seductive, shiny robe with a light golden colour. The bouquet of this Ambassadeur is rich with aromas of ripe white fruit, emphasised by a hint of lychee. On the palate, it is generous with its caramelised fruitiness balanced by a delicate, beautiful acidity. The long-lasting flavour is carried by citrus fruits and sweet spices. An exceptional wine that is best enjoyed with a scallop pan with saffron.
2019
Straw yellow in colour with golden reflections. The 2019 vintage with its citrus and roasted flavours reflects the impressions of ripe fruit from a warm year. Sunny and lush on the palate, the fineness of the tannins accompanies the rich background. It is delicate on the palate and is emphasised by a fresh acidity and a fine salinity. A wine that should be consumed with great pleasure at the moment.
2018
Bright, lemon-yellow colour with celadon hues. The bouquet reveals candied citrus fruits and dried apricots. The slightly woody, brioche-like note adds complexity to the aromatic expression. Fresh and refined on the attack with tension and plenty of fruit on the palate. A very beautiful, sunny, racy and balanced vintage.
Currently very pleasant to drink.
One of Mathier's great ambassadors since the 2013 vintage and the no less successful counterpart to L'Ambassadeur de Diego Mathier red, the world champion Pinot Noir. The best winemaker of the decade also likes to refer to the white Ambassadeur as ‘the cool freshness of the mountains’, with a strict reduction in quantity of half a litre per m2 during the harvest.
The Heida, at 65% the basis of the white blend, gives the wine the necessary backbone and freshness. The Petite Arvine (25%) guarantees the unmistakable flavour and saltiness, while the Ermitage (10%) lends a fruity note of raspberries. At an advanced age, the white blend also develops notes of white truffle.
The juice from the destemmed and pressed grapes is matured on the lees in new barrique barrels for six months without being filtered. The wine is then blended and matured for a further ten months in the same oak barrels. After maturing for a total of 16 months in French oak barrels, the white L'Ambassadeur de Diego Mathier AOC has reached its perfect quality.
